Premarital Counseling

Premarital counseling is taking a proactive approach to your marriage. Would you like to strengthen your relationship with your fiancée and discover areas for further growth? Set your marriage up for success with premarital counseling.

Premarital counseling is a type of couples counseling that is more preventative and fosters a relationship’s longevity, rather than being reactionary to a current problem in a relationship. Every relationship has different struggles. Through premarital counseling you can investigate areas of sensitivity and develop strategies to successfully resolve conflict before it happens.

We will also assess your strengths as a couple and incorporate the latest psychological research to help increase the quality and longevity of your relationship. Premarital counseling will provide you and your partner with the tools you need to weather the ups and down of life so that you can have a long and satisfying marriage.

At Artemis Counseling, our couples counselors customize premarital counseling services to meet the needs of your relationship. You can expect your counselor to ask questions about your goals and potential barriers to connection during your intake appointment. Topics that are frequently covered during premarital counseling include the following:

  • Wedding planning stress
  • Marriage beliefs
  • Adjustment to married life
  • Communication issues
  • Conflict resolution
  • Problem-solving
  • Financial stress
  • Careers
  • Household management
  • Parenting and children
  • Family of origin (what did you learn about relationships?)
  • Coping skills / managing emotions
  • Life goals and values
  • Religion and spirituality
  • Intimacy, sexuality and romance

If it is desired, sometimes our couples counselors may suggest books that they believe could provide you both with education about a particular topic. You may also be given homework to work on specific goals related to your relationship between sessions. Depending on your needs and preferences, your premarital counseling could be anywhere from 4-6 sessions to 20 sessions or more.
